CYMC celebrates Broadway genius Stephen Sondheim
Video, photos, singing, dance and spoken word blended together to create a multimedia musical event.
When: Wednesday, July 7, 2010, 7:30pm
Where: Stan Hagen Theatre
Tickets: $15.00 at the door or at the Sid Williams Theatre Box Office
Composer Stephen Sondheim will take centrestage this Wednesday, July 7 at the Stan Hagen Theatre when CYMC Musical Theatre celebrates his 80th birthday. Often cited as the greatest living musical theatre composer, Sondheim is best known for creating such incredible musicals as West Side Story, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd (which CYMC will premiere for Comox Valley audiences from July 20-25 at the Sid Williams Theatre).
In honour of Sondheim’s 80th birthday, CYMC Musical Theatre will present a multimedia introduction to the great master’s work. Blending video and rare photos of the composer with live performances of some of his greatest songs, the evening promises to be one of the most exciting concerts of the year. CYMC Musical Theatre Program Director, Ashley Daniel Foot says that the evening will act as a primer for those who might not be familiar with Sondheim’s work and a delicious treat for those who are. “The multimedia component of the concert is so exciting because it allows the audience to fully connect with this great man.”
In the theatre community, Sondheim is universally revered for his unique and complicated melodies and intelligent lyrics that challenge both audience and performer: “He’s a complete singularity” says performer Sean Baker (from the Victoria Operatic Society’s Grease) who will appear as a special guest in this Wednesday’s celebration. Other performers scheduled to appear on July 7 include Vanier theatre head honcho Lori Mazey, Songs for a New World star Alison Roberts, CYMC Alumni Josiah George, Lindsay Robinson (the artistic director of Victoria’s brand new theatre company ASAP Theatre), Roger Carr (the director of CYMC’s Sweeney Todd) and Ashley Daniel Foot. Musical direction for the evening will be handled by CYMC’s own Kristopher Epps. “Audiences will hear such Sondheim classics as “Send in the Clowns” but will also discover many new and exciting songs from such shows as Sunday in the Park with George and Passion” says Epps.
CYMC Musical Theatre is proud to present this very special concert, 80 Years of Stephen Sondheim: A Multimedia Musical Celebration this Wednesday, July 7, 7:30pm at the Stan Hagen Theatre. Tickets are available at the Sid Williams Theatre by calling 250-338-2430 or online at http://www.sidwilliamstheatre.com

Of musical theatre that is.
So claims the New York Time‘s Ben Brantley in his review of the Roundabout Theatre’s new Sondheim creation Sondheim on Sondheim:
“Is Stephen Sondheim God?” And the answer, for those of us for whom musicals are truly a religion, is — now as then — yes. Or to use the language of the common folk, “Well, duh.”
It seems that Sondheim is everywhere at the moment, and so we thought what better time than now to dig into the master’s history and start prepping up your knowledge in time for CYMC’s Sondheim debut this summer. Sweeney Todd at CYMC will mark the first time a Stephen Sondheim musical has ever been performed by our company! Consider this your virtual guide to all things Sondheim:
“Is Stephen Sondheim God?” And the answer, for those of us for whom musicals are truly a religion, is — now as then — yes. Or to use the language of the common folk, “Well, duh.”
